If you are new to the game of pocket billiards, or have been shooting for a couple of years and need to better your fundamental skills for shooting, then The 99 Critical Shots In Pool is a really good starting point to get you in the game. Written by Ray Martin and Rosser Reeves, it boldly promises that you will find everything you need to learn and master the game.
Let’s talk about it.
First of all, T99CSIP is really more about straight pool—14.1—however, there are plenty of shots that come up in other games. Second, there are actually only about 89 shots, carefully chosen to illustrate the many different principles of the game.
The book opens by giving a sound understanding of the Cue, Grip, and Stroke. It then proceeds to teach some wonderful shots that come up in game after game.
This is one of those books I wish I’d had when I was first learning the game.
Practicing the shots in this book will bring your game to a new level. One of the things that makes this book unique, besides the generous price point, is the fact that the later parts have cluster drills designed to help you see some of the shots that seem to be unmakeable. you set ‘em up, and knock ‘em down!
It’s a fun book to learn from, and if you are just starting out in the sport, it’s a godsend.
